Memorial Day 5 mile run

by petetanguay on May.31, 2010, under Training Runs

Nice Monday run – did the normal route but slept in and ran at 6 instead of 5. Ran at a steady pace and felt better than yesterday. Interesting to think that my 5.18 mile run today was 5 minutes slower than my 5 mile race on Saturday.  Considering how I felt today I feel better about my race on Saturday!

Really enjoy running with faster runners when they are on a recovery run as I can hang with them and watch how effortlessly they are running. Worked on relaxing my shoulders and running with my arms down closer to my waist, something I read the other day and it was nice. Now it’s off to a relaxing day – nice to have the day off!

Summertime 7

by petetanguay on May.30, 2010, under Training Runs

It is definitely getting to be Summer – by 5 miles my feet are sloshing in soaked socks.  Set out to run 8-10 today with a faster group and ran the first 4 at a good pace.  Felt good but knew I wasn’t going to be able to run the full 10 at that pace.  This was an easy pace for them so I am starting to yo-yo (falling back, catching up, falling  back…) and decided to cut it short and head back.  Slowed down a bit and finished the run as the sun started to get hot.  84% humidity is like rain without raindrops.  So glad I am not training for another marathon and wonder if I will ever do another one.  Doing a 20 mile training run seems impossible.  Just running, having fun, staying in shape and enjoying the friendships I’m making along the way.

Rock Run 8k

by petetanguay on May.29, 2010, under Mavia, Races

Had a good race this morning.  Had only run a couple times this week as I had been out of town.  I’m a little frustrated that my mile 3-4 were not down in the 7:30 pace but that’s ok.  Had a good finish.  I think I am running hard, but not racing.  I try to make sure that I do not run out of gas on the course and I don’t, but I wonder how much more I could do if I could push myself harder.  Now, with that said, I felt real good today.  Had a nice first mile, stayed controlled and relaxed the entire race and finished relatively strong.  It was a beautiful day and race route and I got second place in my age division (that is because 2 others placed in the senior masters divisions and can not place in the 50-54 age group, otherwise I would have been 4th).  Just off the golf course where I shot a 75 (best round of the year!), 3 over on the front and even on the back so it’s been a good day and a great start to a Memorial Day weekend.

We got new Conway Running Club singlets to run in and Judy had them at the race today.  I ordered a shirt but not a singlet.  I’ve committed to run all of my races for Mavia and remember the families who are fighting NF.  I don’t wear it any other time and don’t run a race without it.  It’s added an element to my racing and I deeply hope that some day they will find a way to treat and cure NF.  It is definitely possible.

Look Mom, no watch

by petetanguay on May.25, 2010, under Training Runs

Only 3 hours of sleep and when I got up to go run I was in a hurry and forgot my watch.  That’s about like forgetting my shoes!!  Did hill repeats today.  Ran hard on the way over with a friend as I was a little late and the group was already out of the parking lot.  Spent the first two miles to the base of the hill catching up with the lead group.  Finally caught them, then we arrived at the hill and I watched them go.  Did 3 1/4 mile repeats and headed back.  Walked a bit with some friends and then ran real hard the last couple of miles.  No watch to give me a report but it was a good run.  Headed to the airport for the week and I’m glad I got that 5 mile run in!!!

Hot long run … and walk

by petetanguay on May.23, 2010, under Training Runs

Haven’t done a run longer than 10 miles since the Hogeye marathon and decided to get one in before I start thinking 10 miles is a long run.  Ran with a slower group and the way out was real slow but fun to just focus on the beautiful morning we had before us.  Temps were mid 70’s and it was humid - here comes Arkansas summertime.  Ran the pickles gap route – 6.7 miles at the turn around and lots of hills.  I had to work to stay hydrated – fortunately we had lots of fluids out.  This was the first run of 2010 where my shoes got completely wet, leaving wet footprints on the road with soaked socks.  Stopped for water after the big hill at mile 9 and the others went on and I never caught them again.  I tried but before long I was thinking that walk/running sounded good.  Hey, I’m not training for anything so I don’t have to have this long run.  I covered the miles but did quite a bit of walking in the last few miles.  All in all a good run, but I am a bit drained.

Steady Friday Run

by petetanguay on May.21, 2010, under Training Runs

Had a nice run this morning.  Started out at a slower pace talking and laughing with friends and after a mile pulled ahead with Curt and ran a comfortable pace.  Not pushing really, other than mile 5 which started to feel like we were going slow.  It was a beautiful morning for a run and a great way to start the last day of the week.  I keep having trouble getting out of bed but am always glad I did when I get into my run.  I’m so thankful for the running group.

Solo run

by petetanguay on May.19, 2010, under Training Runs

Hit the alarm at 4:30 and woke up at 4:52, not enough time to meet the group at 5.  Rolled over to go back to sleep and realized, “I need a run”.  Left the house about 5:30 with a general direction and a plan to do 5 or 6 miles.  Ran out the back of Centennial and did the full Spencer Mountain loop and up College to the fitness center, then back home.  Goal was to run as relaxed and comfortable as I could.  I stopped a couple of times and walked back 50 paces, turned around and walked 50 paces and ran again.  Stopped at the fitness center to get some water.  I intentionally did not look at my pace.  I’m happy to see it was about an 8:30 pace average including the hills.  I enjoyed the run by myself but realize, once again, that if it wasn’t for the running group I would not run as much as I do.

Monday Run

by petetanguay on May.17, 2010, under Training Runs

It’s always nice to get out and run on Monday.  I enjoy the route and people who run Monday.  Ran a good pace with 4 others but fell back a little in the 5th mile.  Kept moving and worked on relaxing and getting through the run.  Hope to have a strong running week this week.  Still nice not training for anything specific, just running to keep my fitness.

At least I ran

by petetanguay on May.16, 2010, under Training Runs

Run today was a struggle.  Set out to do 13 with a faster group at 5:30 and cut back after 3 to meet up with a slower group doing 10.  About 3 miles into that run I was struggling.  Felt fatigued.  It was good to be back out but running was tough.  Not sure if starting out so fast killed me or not but I certainly wasn’t going to keep up the sub-8 pace for 13 miles!  I’m really glad I am not training for anything specific as I don’t need that added pressure right now.  The temps are heating up and I finished the run today with soaked socks and basically soaked everything else.  I thought about Ed, running the Regensburg Marathon today and hoped he didn’t feel as bad as I did as I finished my 8 mile run!  Looking forward to getting back out and running this week.

Beautiful Sunday Run

by petetanguay on May.09, 2010, under Training Runs

The weather could not be any nicer for a run.  50’s, low humidity, cloud cover to create some pastel orange skies at sunrise.  Set out to do a 10 mile run but ended up running with someone just doing 6 and decided to do 6.  It’s nice not training for anything specific.  I just enjoy my runs and do what I want.  I could have easily done more as I felt great the entire time.  I’ve been working on the form a lot, trying to keep from slouching and losing it as the run goes on.  We kept a very comfortable pace and picked it up at the end.  I had started out with a slower group but when they decided to slow down I caught up with the next group.  So lucky to be able to get out and run.
