Tuesday hills

by petetanguay on Jun.29, 2010, under Training Runs

Had a nice couple of days off after my taxing 5k (yeah, right).  Ran hills this morning – it’s hard to find a lot of hills here but we manage to find them and run them over and over.  Ran 2 Bainbridge hills then down to Reedy and up the hill to the bike path, back to Bainbridge for #3 and down to Prince and back to the fitness center.  Ran with a friend coming back from an injury and enjoyed the pace.  Let the fast group go “their way” at “their speed”.  Not doing enough long runs for my September marathon but my “regular run” distance has gotten up to 6-7 miles.  Feel like if I am going to get out an run I need to do at least 6 and hopefully 7 or 8.

2010 Brickfest 5k

by petetanguay on Jun.26, 2010, under Races

Drove 65 miles to run 3.1 miles and then drove 65 miles back home.  What am I thinking?  It’s all for the team.  This was a grand prix race and I run for the Conway Running Club.  Great friends and great races together.  At the 7:30 start the temp was already in the high 70’s or 80’s.  Race started with a .2  mile uphill (also finished with this – downhill).  Paced myself up this hill and got onto the route.  I felt like I was going at a snails pace and already breathing heavily into the first mile.  Ran the first mile in a 7:04.  Goal was to keep working and not slow down to an easy or conservative pace.  Picked up the pace on a good downhill (we came back up this hill later) and focused on staying with some runners and passing some.

I felt that in the last 5k I did I started my kick too late and finished with too much left and tried to start my kick at mile 2, attacked the hill and worked to keep picking up the pace.  Had someone I was wanting to beat that I passed about 1/2 mile out from the finish line and kept picking it up.  Tried to run a controlled pace and a controlled race.

Although my time was a minute slower than a 5k a month ago that was flat and cooler, I am happy with my time.  I still want to get my 5k time down into the 21 – 22 minute range.

Don’t stop, keep running

by petetanguay on Jun.22, 2010, under Training Runs

Ran hills this morning, starting with a faster group and ending up by myself.  The goal in mile 4-6 was to keep going, not cut the run short and not walk.  The heat beats me up and I feel like I don’t have any energy.  Worked to get some form back to keep me moving.  I keep thinking, why did I sign up for the hot marathon in Tupelo.  Don’t really have an answer yet!  :)   Overall, had a good run and have recovered and am ready for Tuesday!

No run today

by petetanguay on Jun.21, 2010, under Training Runs

Great non-run today.  Still felt zapped from the heat yesterday and enjoyed the extra sleep.  Although I love the Monday run route, I opted to skip it today and will be back out there tomorrow.  Plan to continue my working out at the gym later today.  The soreness is starting to wear off from last week so I better get back in the gym!!

Fathers Day Run

by petetanguay on Jun.20, 2010, under Training Runs

Ran the Soaring Wings Half Marathon course this morning with some friends.  Felt good at the start but the heat slowly zapped me.  I lose so much fluids during these hot runs that after about 7-8 miles my mind is working hard at figuring out how to cut the run short!  I finished the 13.1 but walked almost a mile of it with my watch off.  Basically just did what my body wanted to do and put in the miles.  No pushing hard, just getting in the run.  Enjoyed the run/walk – a great way to start the day.

Friday 5 miler

by petetanguay on Jun.18, 2010, under Training Runs

Ran the “downtown” route today with 4 others.  It felt like we were pushing but the watch says we weren’t.  I’m learning that running in the heat requires that you accept slower pace.  Had a good last mile and a good run all around.  I’m going to rest tomorrow and run the Soaring Wings half marathon course on Sunday.  Looking forward to that.  Started working out at the gym today after my run.  I’m going to try and work out 3 days a week to build some core and upper body strength.  I knew I was out of shape but I am down right weak!!!!

Half tempo run + hills

by petetanguay on Jun.17, 2010, under Training Runs

Had a good run this morning.  Got in from New Jersey at midnight so 4:30 came early today.  Was a little late and had to catch up to the group.  Ran most of the tempo route with a friend at a slower pace than usual and then extended on to add a 2.25 mile loop with a couple good hills.  Nice to end up with 8 miles.  Pushed myself to keep a good pace.  Great way to start the day.

Hot Monday run

by petetanguay on Jun.14, 2010, under Training Runs

Sure seemed like we were going faster than the Garmin reported!  90% humidity and hot to start the run at 5am.  Felt good the first 3-4 miles but then started to slow along the bike path where I always do.  Ran Country Club hill  which felt like a beast and then added on to get 6 miles.  Focused on trying to keep a pace as I was tired and did not walk.  Good run to start the week.  I’ll be travelling the next couple of days and back running on Thursday.

Some runs are a struggle

by petetanguay on Jun.13, 2010, under Training Runs

Like today.  Had planned to do 5 or 6 since I was tired after my run, golf, swim yesterday.  Set out on an 8 mile route with a faster group and felt good the first 3 miles but could tell that I wouldn’t be able to keep up so I cut it short at about 3.5 miles and ran / walked back.  Turned my watch off when I walked.  It was very hot and humid and the last few miles were tough.  I’m traveling this week and so I’m going to have an easy running week and try to get some strength back.

Saturday 10 miler

by petetanguay on Jun.12, 2010, under Training Runs

Nice 10 mile run in hot/humid weather.  Ran an easy pace, added Spencer Mountain hill in the middle and had great running friends to run with.  Never really struggled, stopped for water 3 times so I was able to replenish the incredible amount of fluids I lost through my sweat.  Had a good running week, 6 runs and 37.5 miles.
