Great Saturday run – 13.1

by on Nov.03, 2012, under Training Runs

Oh how happy I am that my injuries are behind me.  I am so thankful to be able to get out and do a half marathon training run.  Beautiful morning for a run and the best runner friends to do it with.  Putting in the work so I can go for a sub-1:40 in Memphis in a month.  Not sure I can do it but I’ll leave it out there trying.  Felt really comfortable out there today.

Man, I went from taper to tempo without doing a race!  New York is behind me even though the race is this Sunday.  Everything cancelled and I’m 100% focused on the Memphis half.  I’m running well and would love to break 1:40.  That will take a 7:37 pace, a bit faster than today’s tempo.

Felt great to run today.  Really focused on my form and enjoying that I can run.  Stayed with a faster group since they didn’t step on the gas.  I’m going to rest tomorrow and do a 12 miler Saturday.  Love being back out running, injury free!

Frustration run

by on Oct.31, 2012, under Training Runs

I’ve made the decision not to run New York.  With all of the devastation from the hurricane and the certain travel hassles, we’re not going.  It’s bittersweet and frustrating.  It’s nice to know we’re saving $3,000.  I can’t even believe I was spending that much to go run a marathon.  I think I ran Berlin for less than that.  As of now they are still planning to have it.  How this will happen will be interesting to see.  The airports are just opening back up, the subways are still shut down, water is everywhere, 7,000 trees are down, neighborhoods have been eliminated, the convention center where the expo is to be is flooded, and on and on.  It’s a very sad time for the people who live there.

On the other hand, the city depends on the revenue from the thousands of people who come for the marathon.  Others from Arkansas are still planning to go.  My heart just isn’t in it anymore.  And I’ve realized my heart wasn’t in it before I got accepted through the lottery.  It’s a crazy feeling.  My focus turned this morning to the Memphis half marathon which is in about a month.  Time to get some speed work in and see what I can do there.

So this morning was a non-taper frustration run.  Trying to get rid of “that feeling”.

Quick 5 miler

by on Oct.24, 2012, under Training Runs

Took a couple days off to get some rest.  It’s interesting, at first I start to feel rested and then it turns into feeling sluggish.  I needed to get out and run again today.  I did a 5 miler with a couple friends.  They started out pretty quick and I thought I was going to drop back and then they slowed a bit.  It was good to focus on form and keep the pace.  The last couple miles one dropped back and the run turned into an easy run.  Nice to get out and run.  I need to get rid of this tired feeling.

Sunday 7 miler

by on Oct.21, 2012, under Training Runs

Nice Sunday run up and over the Beast.  Felt a little tired a couple of times but turned my focus to form and technique and was right back on track.  I am thinking that I’m going to set my “electric” pace in the NY marathon at 8:45 or 8:50 to see if I can settle in to this pace and still have gas at mile 20.  2 weeks from right now I’ll be 40 minutes from the start of the race.  Easy running week ahead followed by a good taper week and then come on New York.

Soaring Wings training run

by on Oct.20, 2012, under Training Runs

Decided to help with the last Soaring Wings half marathon training run today.  They were doing a 10 miler and that sounded good.  I ran with various runners and hung with the last one for a bit.  She was a girl who is committed to finish her first half marathon, willing to walk / run by herself and finish last in every training run.  She is going to do this and it is going to change her life.  Was passing Paul Turner (PT) and he turned around and ran with me starting about mile 2.  We ended up running together for another 10 or so.  He was just out for one of his 2-3 hour runs.  We caught up to other runners, checking on them and then looped around, picked up the pace a bit, and caught up with the last runners again and walked / encouraged them for a few minutes.  The last one (mentioned above) was working her way through the 10 miler.  It was her longest run ever.  I saw her finishing up as I was driving home.  I yelled her name and she looked surprised and then smiled.  Next Saturday is going to be a big day in her life.  I am not running but will be cheering.  I hope I see her and can yell out her name.

Felt good to cover the 11-13 miles – not sure what it was as I forgot to turn my watch on for awhile after I stopped.  The watch had 8.5 on it and I am pretty sure I ran another 3 or so.   Doesn’t really matter.  I’m a little sorer that I wanted to be but feeling very good about the New York marathon.  Starting to lean towards making a very aggressive race plan as this will be the last marathon I will do in awhile and my 4th for the year.

I’m thankful to be running and running injury free.  Quite amazing in fact.

Running with my Group Again

by on Oct.16, 2012, under Training Runs

So great to be back running with my group again.  During the summer I would just watch as they went off at their comfortable pace much faster than I could keep up with.  This morning was nice and cool and it felt great to be able to click along at an 8 minute pace.  I am so thankful for the faster runners I get to run with and even though I wasn’t able to keep up the last couple miles as they picked it up, they help me so much, pushing me along.  Great run this morning with a few hills mixed in and a good focus on form – lengthened spine, chin level/down, leveled pelvis, lengthen the stride to the back in a circular motion.

Monday run

by on Oct.15, 2012, under Training Runs

Had a nice run this morning.  There was a small group because a lot of the Memphis trainers are taking Monday off.  I focused on form today, mostly on keeping my arms close to my side and feeling my elbows going out to the back.  Also feeling my feet kick out to the back, engaging the core and everything else going forward.  Mark and I ran together and he wanted to slow a bit in mile 3-4 so we did and then went up Bainbridge hill which felt good.  I felt very comfortable on the run and look forward to more of these as I get ready for New York.

Last recovery run

by on Oct.13, 2012, under Training Runs

Had a good recovery run today with 3 people who run at a slower, easier pace.  They run/walk and it was enjoyable to relax and run with them.  Worked out perfect because after about a mile and a half I had to stop to go to the bathroom so I had a good “catch up” run for a mile or so.  With about a mile and a half two of us decided to pick it up and finish hard.  Felt really good.  I’m amazed at how my body feels.  So happy.

With the marathon I got in 42 miles in 3 runs for the week and that’s a good place to be with 3 weeks to go until New York.  Mentally I’ve switched from Chicago recovery to New York training.  Still working on my race plan, but definitely excited.

On the road again

by on Oct.11, 2012, under Training Runs

Three nice days off with some dental surgery mixed in there, and I’m back out running with my awesome friends.  I felt so good this morning.  My right thigh felt a little like a rock but didn’t hurt.  We ran a nice pace and I’m mentally switching to New York Marathon mode.  3 weeks from Sunday.  I’ve got the Soaring Wings half marathon 2 weeks from Saturday and have decided to run the first half of it at marathon pace and then put the hammer down to feel a very strong hammer!!  Should be a lot of gas left.  Hope to drop it to 7:45 for the last half.  I think that’s a good plan one week out from NY.

Weather is perfect, Fall is here, injuries  are gone, life is good.
